Sometimes a visual is all you need in order to start to think differently. Everyone concentrates on the orange boxes. You most likely have a very good process and somehow you are not as happy with the results.
Every year you go through the process and find that you are either getting the same suppliers to respond. Or even worse fewer suppliers are responding.
Which is why I often focus on the yellow boxes. Especially the first one!
Selection has to start with the search. Which means going to conferences and talking to suppliers about what they do. Attend seminars where the speaker will provide you with hints and tips. Follow me on LinkedIn as I will soon start to showcase suppliers that you should meet.
Do plant tours so you can learn different ways of becoming more effective.
I do a lot of research. When I have a commodity where my supplier base has become stagnant then I search for alternatives. I accept cold calls and allow myself 15 to 30 minutes to find out if what they are selling is something I can use. I don’t jump to the conclusion that I know what they do by their company name or their website. As I explain my challenges, I listen to determine if they have a solution I hadn’t thought of.
